Community Life

COMMUNITY LIFE COMMITTEE

The primary goal of this committee is to improve the quality of community life at Adat Shalom through various activities and programs which enrich and enhance our community experience.

Some of the activities under the sponsorship of the Community Life Committee include:

Shabbat and Havdallah pot luck dinners

A wonderful way to meet fellow Adat Shalomers over a Shabbat or Havdallah meal, while sharing a spiritual and social experience in members' homes. The dates for the potlucks are posted in each issue of the Scroll, with the names of the hosts. Some hosts welcome children of all ages, some specify only teens and others prefer adults only.

Seder Connection

Not everyone in our community has family in the area, and this is an opportunity for members to become each other's family during the holiday. The Seder Connection matches members who would like to join other members for a Pesach Seder, with those who would like to host additional guests at their Seder.

Family Programming Mission Statement

The Family Programming subcommittee addresses family-, parent-, and child-related interests, needs, and concerns that fall outside the scope of the Torah School and Youth Committee.

In order to enrich the spiritual lives of all Adat Shalom families and help children build strong attachments to Judaism, Reconstructionism, and the Adat Shalom community, we work to (1) identify opportunities to better meet the needs of all Adat Shalom families, including those with children not enrolled in Torah School, (2) introduce new programs and activities that help stimulate family participation in Adat Shalom, and (3) support the family-related programs and activities sponsored by other Adat Shalom committees.

We are especially interested in encouraging family worship and family participation in social action activities and enhancing the family-friendliness of our building.

Village support activities

Villages are an effort to create smaller, more intimate communities within our larger Adat Shalom community. Villages are geographic groupings of homes with volunteer captains who serve as liaisons with the larger Adat Shalom community. Villages can serve as a wonderful first line of support for members who experience a life cycle event, such as the birth of a baby or the death of a loved one. The villages can also organize various holiday activities, such as Sukkah parties, Shabbat or Havdallah pot lucks and other other social group activities.

Our community is a diverse and multifaceted one, and as we strive to remain a vibrant and exciting home for our members, we welcome your suggestions and ideas for maintaining and strengthening our community.

Suggestions and concerns regarding any of our projects, ideas you may have for projects, or questions and concerns are welcome.

"Let all who work with the congregation do so for the sake of heaven; the merit of their ancestors will sustain them, and as a result, their righteousness will remain forever." --Rabban Gamliel
