What is an oneg?

Onegs include luncheons following Saturday morning Shabbat services and mid-week holiday services, desserts following Friday night Shabbat Slams, and potlucks for holiday celebrations. The oneg is a highly-valued institution at Adat Shalom. It helps us build and nurture our warm and welcoming community by giving us a chance to gather informally on a regular basis.

How many times do I have to host an oneg?

Each "member unit" (single or couple) is required to host two onegs per year. Members are welcome to host more than two onegs if they wish. The "oneg year" (OY for short) runs from September through August, to coincide more closely with the Jewish calendar.

Do new members have to host onegs?

Yes. New members are asked to host onegs as well. It's a great way to meet other members of the community.

Can I choose my own dates?

There is a sign-up period each summer when members can choose their own dates. When the sign-up period is over, anyone who has not signed up for two dates will be assigned dates randomly. These dates may include Friday night Shabbat Slams or special holiday services and events, in addition to Shabbat luncheon onegs.

I forgot my dates; how can I find out what they are?

Look on the new onegs signup page on the website.

Will I be assigned to captain?

No. All captains are volunteers. However, anyone who has worked more than two or three onegs is encouraged to volunteer to captain.

Whom do I contact about my food contribution?

Contact the captain(s) for that oneg. Their name(s) will be listed prominently in the e-mail notification you receive. Please do not hit reply as that will send your message to the Hospitality Committee NOT the captain.

Who will be the captain for my scheduled date?

Look on the new onegs signup page on the website.

I can't participate on my scheduled day, can the Hospitality Committeee find a swap for me?

No. Members are required to arrange their own swaps. Most members find it relatively easy to arrange a swap by posting a message to the Adat Shalom listserve.

What should I do after I've arranged a swap?

Please e-mail Oneg Chairs after you have arranged your swap, so that the database can be updated.

I'm no longer on this crew because I switched with someone; can the Hospitality Committee figure out who I switched with?

Probably not. That is why it's so important to notify Oneg Chairs after you have arranged your swap, so that the database can be updated.

Can't I just drop off my contribution?

No. Oneg duty does not mean simply bringing food. The model of our community is that we work cooperatively; and the expectation is that you will give your food and your time to Adat Shalom.

Can just one of us participate?

Again, the model of our community is that we work cooperatively, and both members are expected to participate. For example: members with small children to supervise may want to ask the captain for duties that are either child-friendly or ask for a couple of tasks that are at different times, so one can do an oneg task while the other is child occupied. Exceptions for more complex situations should be discussed with the oneg captain or the Hospitality Committee.

My oneg date is next month; what do I do?

Detailed instructions and an updated crew list are e-mailed to the captain and crew about three weeks before each oneg. To see a list of the captain and crew at any time go to oneg website. To see the oneg instructions at any time use the links at the top of this page to for food suggestions (The Virtual Oneg), or for captain and crew instructions.

Where can I find the oneg instructions?

To see the oneg instructions at any time use the links at the top of this page.

My daughter's Bat Mitzvah is coming up; what do I need to do about the oneg?

Detailed B'nai Mitzvah oneg guidelines are included in the B'nai Mitzvah guidelines on the Adat Shalom website. E-mail the Hospitality Committee for further clarification if needed.

I've moved/changed my e-mail address. You got the new info from the Adat Shalom database, right?

No. We do not receive automatic updates. Please notify Oneg Chairs if your contact information changes. We can't send your reminders and instructions if we don't have your current information.

What if I'm unable to do oneg duty due to a serious ongoing illness?

Oneg exemptions can be granted when necessary. E-mail the Hospitality Committee.

What happens if I ignore the whole thing?

Serving as oneg hosts is a basic requirement for belonging to the Adat Shalom Community. The Hospitality Committee tries to make it as easy as possible by providing detailed instructions, serving suggestions, a well stocked kitchen, and reminders about scheduled dates. We will also work with members to sort out any problems which may arise. If a member does not respond to e-mails or phone calls and/or simply does not show up for their scheduled date, they will be rescheduled for another date. If the same member does this repeatedly, the Hospitality Committee will ask the Board to pursue the matter.
