Capital Camps & Retreat Center
12750 Buchanan Trail East
Waynesboro, PA 17268
(717) 794-2177

Only a 90-minute drive from metro Washington (more in rush hour!), this idyllic camp facility has an aquatics center, ropes/challenge course, arts & theatre center, two picturesque lakes, several hiking trails, gymnasia, tennis courts, and sports fields. Driving directions and a detailed schedule will be sent before the retreat.

Dates/Time

Registration for the retreat and pre-programming begin at 3:00 pm on Friday, June 9. The formal program will begin with Friday Evening Shabbat dinner at 6:30 pm, and will end around 1:00 pm on Sunday, June 11.

Accommodations

Capital Camps & Retreat Center offers a broad range of accommodations-lodge rooms with air conditioning, family cabins, and platform tents. Lodge rooms are available with private bath and shared baths. Each family cabin has its own bath. A unique experience being offered this year for families are the 4-6 person platform tents-fully assembled raised canvas tents with cots, electricity, lights, and a brand-new shower house.

Individuals attending the retreat alone can arrange for their own roommates if all parties request this on their registration forms. Individuals not indicating a preference will be assigned roommates. All rooms are non-smoking. For those with health problems or wheelchair access requirements, please indicate special needs on your registration form.

Hotel. For those who prefer greater privacy and comfort, we have arranged for a block of rooms at a local motel, which is located about 10 minutes away from the Retreat Center. For information about the hotel, contact Sheila Feldman at 301-767-3333 x107 or sheila.feldman@adatshalom.net.

Registration

Registration fees pay for our use of the Retreat Center, meals, lodging, materials, and staff salaries for the youth program. The rates are set to reflect our best projection of actual costs of the retreat. The retreat is intended to be a full weekend experience. The pricing structure is designed to encourage everyone to come for the full retreat and to permit attendance by larger families (via a maximum registration fee for Retreat Center accommodations). Costs for families staying in tents are especially affordable, but space is limited. We recognize that not everyone's schedules allow them to come for the whole weekend - so again this year we have a one-night category as well as Saturday-only attendance (no overnight).

The retreat is intended to be a full weekend experience. The pricing structure is designed to encourage everyone to come for the full retreat, and to permit attendance by larger families. (We've set a maximum registration fee for 4-H accommodations.) However, we also recognize that not everyone's schedules allow them to come for the whole weekend - so again this year we have a one-night category as well as Saturday-only attendance (no overnight). The fees for those categories reflect a fair share of the actual, fixed costs of the retreat.

As with all of our programs, financial assistance is available for those who could not attend without it. Contact Sheila Feldman (sheila.feldman@adatshalom.net or (301) 767-3333 x107) to arrange for a confidential rate reduction.

The 2-sided registration form is enclosed. To help us with our planning, we'd appreciate your sending it in as early as possible. Also, note the registration deadlines: If your registration is not received by May 18, you will need to pay a late fee charge. Registration cannot be accepted after May 27.

Food

Capital Camps is a glatt kosher facility under the supervision of a mashgiach. We will do our best to serve healthy and delicious vegetarian meals. Meals will be primarily ovo-lacto-vegetarian, but we will include fish in the menu. There will be a dairy-free or vegan alternative available at every meal. We will have lots of vegetables and salads. There will be munchies and beverages available throughout the day.

Please note that no food may be brought into the facility without the advance permission of Capital Camps and Retreat Center staff. If you are on a special diet, we'll do our best, but cannot guarantee that the menu can accommodate you. If you have concerns in this area, contact Sheila Feldman in the office.

Tzedakah - Community Support Opportunity

Our annual retreat is a wonderful spiritual and educational experience. For some members, however, participation poses financial difficulties. Please consider making a donation to help defray some of the costs for fellow members who need assistance in order to attend. (See Registration form.)

Volunteers Needed!

The retreat would not be possible without help from our members. Please volunteer for:

On-site Registration
Topic facilitators
Saturday afternoon leisure activities
Saturday night entertainment
Community Safety Patrol

Please volunteer now by indicating your area of interest on the registration form.

We look forward to a terrific and memorable 2006 retreat!

Youth Programming

CAMP ADAT SHALOM

Children ages 0-2:Childcare for infants and toddlers will be provided during all retreat program hours. Parents are expected to care for their own children during meals and free time periods. We will send a list of what to bring with the information packets before the retreat.
Children ages 3-5:A separate program designed specifically for preschoolers is being planned. It will feature crafts, music and outside play, and will be held concurrently with the adult programs. Parents are expected to care for their own children during meals and free time periods.
Youth: K- 5th gradeWe will continue our tradition of a camp experience for primary school age children. Crafts, music, sports and other outdoor activities, conducted like a real summer camp, will keep kids busy and engaged, along with some opportunities for programming together with the grown-ups. And we will have plenty of tricks up our sleeve this year in the event of inclement weather! Some counselors with Jewish camping experience will return this year, along with talented first-timers. Parents are expected to care for their own children during meals and free time periods.
Young teens:
6th - 8th grade
Young teens will have the opportunity to hang out with their friends while enjoying the freedom and independence to create their own retreat experience with a counselor. During program hours there will be both age-appropriate activities and free-time options. The make-up of the group will help the staff and leaders to create a plan of exciting activities. The staff and leaders will tailor a plan of exciting activities to the group that registers by 5/18. (Note: A minimum of 5 young teens is needed to make this program happen.)
Older teens:
9th grade and up
Although some teens may opt to attend the adult programming, some of our teens may help out as junior counselors (assistant madrichim) at Camp Adat Shalom. Assistant madrichim must register and pay for room and board, but will receive community service or a small stipend for their assistance during the weekend. These slots are limited.

Others may serve as assistants to the retreat coordinators (help set up registration, carry chairs, deliver messages, and anything else they may be needed for). This is not a paid position, but it is excellent experience. We can offer evaluations, recommendations, and community service hours.
