Torah School Home The Torah School Academic Program Ganon:
GANON PROGRAM is a preschool program for 3 and 4 year olds that meets two mornings a month, from 10:15 am -12:15 pm. Sessions take place on the first and third Shabbat of each month except during January when we meet on the second and fourth Shabbats. At this point the children will be in a combined class; if the number of student exceeds the class size, we will look into having another class. The final school calendar, which will be mailed in August, will contain the specific dates that each class will meet. The Music Teacher regularly comes to the class. Each week, the class has a snack of challah and juice, provided by the families on a rotating basis.
Kitot Gan (K), Alef (1), and Bet (2):
Gan, Alef, and Bet meet every Shabbat from 9:30 am to 12:30 pm. Students will attend an age appropriate Shabbat morning service during the school day. Music and Art are a regular part of the Torah School program. Each week, the class has a snack of challah and juice, provided by the families on a rotating basis.
Kitot Gimmel (3), Daled (4), and Hey (5):
Gimmel, Daled and Hey will focus on Judaics on Shabbat from 9:30 am to 12:30 pm and on Hebrew on Wednesdays from 4:15 pm - 6:15 pm. Music and Art are a part of our regular Torah School curriculum. Students in each of these grades will participate in age appropriate Minyanim (services) led by great minyan leaders on Shabbat and Cantor Rachel on Wednesday afternoons. At designated times during the school year, students will participate in the congregational Shabbat morning Shacharit service (from 9:30 - 10:15) instead. Final calendar information will be sent home in August.
Kitot Bav (6) and Zayin (7):
Vav and Zayin will focus on Judaics on Sundays from 10:00 am to 12:30 pm and on Hebrew on Wednesdays from 4:15 pm - 6:15 pm. Students will participate in a 30 minute Shacharit (morning) Service on Sundays and an afternoon prayer service led by Cantor Rachel on Wednesdays. There will be two scheduled times when theses classes will be expected to attend regular Shabbat morning services and join their teachers in the library for a Torah discussion. In addition, all students in these classes are required to attend at least four additional Shabbat Services of their choosing.
Kitot Chet (8):
Chet meets twice monthly on Sunday mornings from 10:30 am - 12:30 pm. Sessions take place on the first and third Sundays of each month except during January when we meet on the second and fourth weeks. Attendance at Shacharit services from 10-10:30 am is optional. The major themes for this curriculum include Pirkei Avot (Ethics of Our Fathers) in which we will use movie clips to discuss Jewish ethics; comparative Judaism; comparative religion; and periodic art/cooking projects to enhance our learning. Additional dates for Tikkun Olam projects and a weekend trip are anticipated at some point during the year.
K'nafayim (Grades 9-11):
K'nafayim, which means "wings," is an Upper School Program that meets on the first and third Wednesday evenings from 6:45 pm - 8:30 pm. An exciting new curriculum for post b'nai mitzvah students is being developed. The curriculum is currently being revamped, but the proposed topics include: comparative religion and comparative Judaism; ethical and moral issues for teens; current events, politics, social justice and the environment; Israel; and Judaism for adulthood.
Adat East:
Adat East is a satellite Hebrew program that meets on Tuesdays for students in grades, Daled (4th) and Vav (6th) who live in the Eastern part of Montgomery County. A Gimmel (3rd) class will be offered this year with sufficient registration.
