Gun Violence Project

Gun Violence Protection – Our members participate in grass-roots advocacy, educate and mobilize our fellow congregants and community members to urge legislators to pass laws and regulations to curb easy access to guns and ban high-capacity, military-style automatic weapons.

Adat Shalom Reconstructionist Congregation advocates, consistent with our Jewish values, for sensible federal and state gun laws. We believe that all people, especially children, have the right to grow up free from excessive fear of gun violence.

Towards this effort, our members will share our views with our elected public officials, participate in grass-roots advocacy, educate and mobilize our fellow congregants and communities so that our legislatures will pass common-sense laws and regulations to curb today’s too-easy access to guns in America.

Specifically, Adat Shalom supports the 2013 legislative proposal of the Governor of Maryland, Martin O’Malley, and will support future or comparable proposals with the same primary components pertaining to access to and ownership of guns and ammunition, including:

  • a license requirement for gun ownership;
  • a ban of high-capacity, military-style assault rifles;
  • restricting high-capacity magazines to ten rounds;
  • requiring a license for every handgun purchase, with age restrictions;
  • requiring mandatory safety training;
  • requiring mandatory fingerprinting;
  • requiring an attestation that a person is not prohibited from purchasing or possessing a gun; and
  • requiring that guns be registered when brought in from out-of-state. More broadly, Adat Shalom will advocate at the federal, state, and city council levels in support of the three-point statement endorsed by the Jewish Reconstructionist movement, through its participation in the Faiths United to Prevent Gun Violence alliance.

Thus, we support immediate legislative action to accomplish the following:

  • Every person who buys a gun should pass a criminal background check.
  • High-capacity weapons and ammunition magazines should not be available to civilians.
  • Gun trafficking should be made a federal crime
