What We Teach

The Adat Shalom Torah School is committed to instilling a love of Judaism and Jewish learning in our children. The Torah School staff work to convey a sense of joy and celebration of Judaism, rigor in learning, and openness to questioning. The learning process focuses on developing an appreciation of Jewish history, customs, beliefs, language, ritual, and other teachings within a Reconstructionist context.

  • Hebrew Options – Decoding of Hebrew and comfort in participating in prayers are essential components to our community. Families have choices how students learn Hebrew.
  • Continuing Youth Education – Adat shalom provides several different youth engagement activities post b-mitzvah*.
  • Prayer Service – Our community offers many age-appropriate entry-points for services.  Every Torah School class includes a minyan, a joyous, song-filled, student co-led service.  Tot Shabbat is the link to seamlessly transition children to Torah School minyanim/services – beginning with gan aleph.

Each class minyan is a building block advancing familiarity and comfort with the structure of Shabbat services and the prayers. Each minyan deepens the prayer experience and continues to develop understanding of the service. The goal is for students to participate in any congregation service with comfort and ease.

*We honor our young people’s gender identity and choose this formula rather than the more binary “bar or bat” language.
