Mishnah Garden

Mishnah Garden

Mishna Garden BountyOne of the highlights of our grounds is the 800 square foot Mishnah Garden, which we started in 2009, where we grow a wide variety of vegetables, grains, and herbs.  The purposes of the garden are to learn and teach each other about our agricultural traditions, donate food to those who need it, and share experiences. It started in 2009. In Hebrew, the word, Mishnah, means “to study.” Our Mishnah Garden, aims to inspire social and ecological responsibility in our community and to remind us of our agrarian roots. Adjacent to the garden, we maintain a three-bin composter, turning food waste into a resource.

The vast majority of the harvest is donated to Manna and the Lighthouse Shelter for those in need. Smaller amounts are used in our Oneg (Shabbat lunch) and to celebrate holidays, such as Passover when we harvest our home-grown horseradish.  Children of all ages are welcome to help plant, weed, build raised beds, shovel manure and compost, and harvest.
