A core principle across the Jewish experience, which we hold especially dear at Adat Shalom, is the concept of Tikkun Olam—repairing the world.
Please register here for Tikkun Ha-Ir—repairing the city. In years past we’ve lived and worked primarily in the Columbia Heights neighborhood of Washington, DC., preparing and serving meals for those in need, assisting senior residents of a low-income apartment building, and participating in workshops and simulations with folks from area non-profits like DC Central Kitchen and WE ARE FAMILY.
This year, as we all refashion our lives because of Covid19, Tikkun Ha’Ir will focus on hunger, homelessness and racial justice—all of it through a Jewish prism– but will be rooted primarily in your home environment—both inside and out. We will be working in teams, doing a lot of simulations, real life decision-making, cooking, collecting, competing and scavenging. You will need to be available for much of the day and evening, and sometimes into the night.
There will be regular Zoom sessions, online workshops and activities with local activists and organizers. We will also have breakout groups, surveys, etc. But will keep the screen time limited. The program runs from Sunday evening, June 28th through Wednesday night, July 1st, 2020.
It’s for anyone who loves hands-on experiences, likes to go outside his/her/their comfort zone, who can open their mind to new people and situations, who has a good sense of humor and doesn’t mind going without a shower for several days (but required washing of hands multiple times a day!!!!!).
We are asking for a sliding scale contribution from $360 for those who are able, $270 or $180 for many, less if it’s a hardship to cover donations to those speakers and workshop leaders who will be giving generously of their time and expertise, or, in some cases, to the organizations they represent. We don’t want the cost to participate to be a hardship so please reach out if you have financial concerns. All but $90 of the cost is tax deductible.
The deadline to register is Tuesday, June 23 at 5pm. Priority will be given to those who haven’t previously participated, but I am happy to welcome returnees to Tikkun Ha’Ir as well!
Please provide the information below and either submit your payment via the web or by sending a check to Adat Shalom: 7727 Persimmon Tree Lane, Bethesda, MD. 20817. Please put “Tikkun Ha’Ir” in the memo line of the check.
